Step by Step

This project involved the design of a six-step illustrated instruction brochure that teaches a specific skill through clear, visual communication. Using Adobe InDesign for the final layout, I began by selecting a topic of personal interest and breaking it down into simple, logical steps. I explored multiple visual styles to develop a cohesive set of icons and graphic elements that clearly conveyed each instruction, relying on minimal text and a consistent design system to guide the viewer. The instructions were organized within a folded brochure format to create a smooth, intuitive flow. As a final touch, I animated one of the steps to bring part of the process to life, adding an engaging, interactive element to the overall design.

This animation illustrates Step 5, “Get Everything Investigated by TSA,” using humor and relatable visual storytelling. A suitcase is unzipped and unpacked to capture the familiar chaos and vulnerability of a TSA inspection, emphasizing the absurdity of having personal items exposed despite careful packing. Through playful exaggeration and dynamic pacing, the animation reinforces the inevitability of the process while adding a lighthearted, engaging moment to the overall brochure.

Overall Design Flow

The overall design is fully hand-illustrated, allowing the visuals to feel personal, playful, and cohesive throughout the brochure. Each icon, character, and scene was drawn by hand to create a consistent visual language that supports the step-by-step narrative. The illustrated style adds warmth and humor to an otherwise stressful travel experience, helping the instructions feel more approachable while maintaining clarity and structure across the folded layout.
